The high surf warning kept Oahu lifeguards busy on Tuesday with seven total rescues, three of them from off-duty lifeguards, according to the city's Emergency Services Department.

There were more than 1,800 incidents of preventative action -- 1,300 of them on the North Shore.

Off-duty lifeguards made three rescues in the early morning hours at Laniakea Beach, according to an Emergency Services spokeswoman.  There were also two rescues at Ehukai Beach Park, one at Rock Piles and another at Haleiwa Beach Park.  There were also two assists at Haleiwa Beach Park.

An assist at Makaha Beach Park sent one patient to the hospital in stable condition.

Kauai officials say North Shore beaches on the Garden Isle from Hanalei to Ke'e were closed to swimming on Tuesday due to the high surf.

A high surf warning took effect at around 10 a.m. Tuesday for north and west facing shores of Kauai, Oahu and Molokai as well as the north facing shores of Maui, according to the National Weather Service.  The warning is expected to stay in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.  Surf heights are expected to peak Tuesday afternoon into the evening.

Surf heights are expected to build to heights of 20 to 25 feet along north facing shores and 15 to 20 feet along west facing shores of the affected islands.
