Hawaii man sentenced for amputating dog's pawUPDATED 7:26 PM HST Aug 09, 2013Video Transcript
Can there be a GOOD reason to cut of your dog's paw with scissors? One Hawaii man says he wasn't trying to do any harm... A warning, it's a graphic, gruesome story, and KITV4's Jill Kuramoto was there as the animal cruelty case wrapped up. 27:51 I LOVED THAT DOG VERY MUCH. AND THERE'S NO WAY I WOULD HAVE MALICIOUSLY OR INTEND TO HARM IT. 28:00 John Jenkins was in court this morning ... Apologizing for what he admits was a mistake. THIS is the mistake ... Severing his dog's paw using household items. Many of the pictures are too graphic to show. 26:56 FROM NOW ON I WILL ALWAYS BE CAREFUL TO NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKES LIKE I DID IN THE PAST. 27:05 Jenkins says a friend stepped on the leg of his Chihuahua mix puppy, named Volcano Dog, snapping the bone. But instead of taking the dog to a vet...the unemployed property manager from Kahaluu soaked the dog's leg in Hawaiian salt for half an hour, then cut off the paw with scissors. 22:16 THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE THAT JOHN DID THIS BECAUSE HE ENJOYS BEING CRUEL 22:21 It was a neighbor who offered to take the dog to a vet for help. His attorney says her client couldn't afford a hefty bill and thought what he was doing was ok. 46:21 YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A VETERNARIAN TO BE HORRIFIED BY THAT 46:25 DESPITE ALL MY TRAINING ITS STILL SHOCKING TO SEE 46:27 One of the veterinarians who first saw Volcano Dog when he was brought into the humane society says getting immediate medical help for an injured pet will be cheaper than waiting. 47:03 ABSOLUTELY GETTING IMMEDIATE ATTENTION WHEN THINGS LIKE THIS COME UP CERTAINLY IS GOING TO SAVE YOU MONEY ITS NOT GOING TO GET LESS EXPENSIVE THE LONGER YOU WAIT. 47:09 AND THE POOR ANIMAL SUFFERED HORRIBLY. 47:11 A jury found Jenkins guilty of misdemeanor animal cruelty. Judge Patrick Border sentenced Jenkins to one year probation and 60 days in jail. He was also ordered to serve 200 hours of community service and is not allowed to own an animal while on probation. The defense says it is considering an appeal. Jill Kuramoto, KITV4 News. The amputation happened in May of last year. Since then... Volcano Dog has received proper medical care and was adopted out and is reported to be doing well.
