Hawaii County Council Chair Dominic Yagong defended the County Clerk's actions following concerns about apparent discrepancies in voter registration rolls.

During a forum for Mayoral candidates in Pahoa, Yagong said Jamae Kawauchi is "acting under the direction of the Attorney General."  He added "I  really wish that she would be able to share what she has found with the County of Hawaii because I think when you hear that...you see what she was trying to accomplish, which is simply being thorough."

Kawauchi came to Oahu on Wednesday, and met with someone in the State Attorney General's Office.  However, she did not meet with State Elections Officials who had requested a face-to-face meeting.

Kawauchi shut down the Hilo Election Office on July 23 when she said election officials ran out of time to confirm voter registration information.  "We did our best to complete the review over the weekend, but we came to find that on Sunday evening our work was not yet complete," Kawauchi told KITV4 on Tuesday.  She has not returned calls for comment since that interview.

In Saturday's forum Yagong said he believed information would come from Kawauichi "very, very soon."
