Hail, lightning seen in HawaiiUPDATED 7:22 AM HST Jan 06, 2014Video Transcript
sized hail in Kaneohe and Kailua just before sunset this evening... kicking off a night of wild winter weather across the state. After sundown, thunderstorms began generating frequent lightning strikes. Quite a light show this evening on Oahu and Kauai. Lightning is believe to have sparked this house fire in Lihue, just before 7:00 tonight. Witnesses say they heard a sound like a gun shot just before the fire started. Good evening, I'm Pamela Young. The U.S. Mainland isn't the only venue for unpredictable weather. Justin's got the latest developments here in the islands. A crazy evening Pam. Hail in Hawaii is rare, two bouts in three hours... unheard of! Round two hit Kailua, Waimanalo and Hawaii Kai around 8:30 tonight. The thunderstorms creating this wicked weather are very compact and quick moving. That's why flooding has not been a big concern. Kauai is drying out right now after a brief bout of action around 7:00. Maui County has been fairly quiet, other than the Hana area. And on the Big Island... heavy showers in the South Kona and Kau Districts prompted a flood advisory just after sundown. It was canceled around 9:30.
