Officer killed in training incident
Honolulu police say 39-year-old traffic division officer Chad Morimoto died Monday in a motorcycle training incident.
According to Police Chief Louis Kealoha, officers were conducting escort training near Mililani District Park around 11:40 a.m. when Officer Morimoto's motorcycle "slid out from under him, and hit a curb. Officer Morimoto was transported to Pali Momi medical center with critical injuries, where he later died.
Officer Morimoto joined the Honolulu Police Department in 2004. He workd as a patrol officer in District 6 (Waikiki), and was assigned to the Traffic Division as a solo motorcycle officer in 2010.
Officer Morimoto lived in Salt Lake with his wife, and two children.
Morimoto is the third Honolulu police officer to die in a traffic related incident in the last year. Officer Eric Fontes died on September 13, 2011 when he was struck by a car on Farrington Highway in Kapolei. Officer Garrett Davis died while assisting a motorist on the H-1 freeway on January 21, 2012.
