A gun in a hollowed-out book discovered at the Honolulu International Airport was one of the dangerous, scary and unusual items found by the Transportation Security Administration in 2012, according to The TSA Blog.
The book was discovered in March 2012. The gun had no cylinder.
TSA also says a knife was found in a hollowed out book at Kahului Airport (OGG) in June 2012.

More than 1,500 firearms were discovered in carry-on bags at checkpoints across the country. That's a little more than four firearms per day. Of those found, nearly 79 percent were loaded.
Firearms were found at a total of 199 airport in 2012, with the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at the top of the list with 95.

The following are a few of the more notable firearms incidents:
- A Portland (PDX) passenger put a pistol in potted plant, presumably in an effort to sneak it past us.
- A passenger at Providence TF Green Airport (PVD) had a disassembled gun and ammunition concealed in three stuffed animals.
- A pen pistol was discovered at Allentown (ABE).
- A 22 caliber magazine was discovered wrapped in aluminum foil inside a DVD player at Fresno (FAT).
- A BB gun in a book was discovered at Fargo (FAR).
