Oahu group giving away money
Got an idea for making your community better? There is an Oahu group giving out money each month to fund all kinds of individual projects. The foundation has only been around for six months, but already many think it is pretty "awesome".
Every weekend, there are all kinds of volunteer projects going on to make our communities better.
Now there is also an Oahu group giving money away to help get those projects going.
"We give away a thousand dollars every month for simply an awesome idea," said Tracey Stott Kelley, with the Awesome Foundation.
The organization is the local chapter of the Awesome Foundation, women that hope to encourage others to give back.
"One person and one idea can make a difference, and there are people out there that will believe in you if you put your idea out there," said Kelley.
When it came time to fund improvements at an aging Moilili cemetery, the Awesome Foundation helped start the giving.
"We didn't have a fundraising mechanism. Getting the awesome grant gave us a way to say 'Would like to contribute also, because the Awesome Foundation found this to be a worthy project'," said Moiliili Resident Laura Ruby.
Each month, the grant money goes to a different project, like the idea from a six-year-old to keep homeless kids from being lonely through an art and activity box. There have also been projects to put in school cafeteria benches or encourage exercise at the beach.
"No idea is too silly. No idea is too small," said Kelley.
