Gov. Neil Abercrombie issued a release late Thursday, saying the Hawaii State Teachers Association has walked away from federal mediation.

"The Federal Mediator has informed us that HSTA is ending their participation in mediation," Abercrombie said in the release. "I am very disappointed that HSTA once again is not willing to engage in discussions that could resolve outstanding issues."

On Friday, the HSTA filed a petition with the Hawaii Supreme Court asking the court to order the Labor Relations Board to make a decision on what's called the state's "Last, Best and Final Offer." Teachers have been operating under that mandated contract since July of last year.

HSTA President Wil Okabe is believed to be in Washington, DC, after meeting with federal education leaders regarding Hawaii's Race to the Top grant. He has not been reached for comment.
