Future of BayFest up in the airUPDATED 7:40 PM HST May 07, 2013Video Transcript
Federal budget cuts are slicing the FEST out of Kaneohe's Bay-Fest. Originally slated for the first week in August... It's now cancelled. This would have been the 22nd festival in Hawaii.. KITV4's Brenton Awa finds out if Bay-fest will ever come back... :27-:31 :56-1:00 1:16-1:19 1:27-1:33 Kailua town is full of people passionate about the annual bash held just down the road in Kaneohe... 25-thousand people show up every year... Paula Morath wanted to be one of them this year. She hoped we were at the Kalapawai Market to give away free tickets. Just the opposite, Paula. We're the bearers of bad news... Bayfest is cancelled. 1850 "I WAS KIND OF SHOCKED BUT UNDERSTANDING THE FURLOUGHS WE'RE GOING THROUGH, THINGS ARE TIGHT RIGHT NOW, I CAN UNDERSTAND WHERE THEY HAVE TO MAKE CERTAIN CUTS." Others feel the same way. 1550 "THAT'S A SHAME, BUT AS SOON AS THEY SAID IT WAS CANCELLED, WE KNEW EXACTLY WHY." Today the Marine corps explained the decision ... the latest federal budget cuts may force furloughs of up to 1500 civilian workers at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The two-and-a-half day event takes 1,000 workers to run and more 6-months to plan. 134 "THE MANPOWER BEHIND IT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PIECE OF BAY-FEST AND REALLY WHY WE HAVE TO CANCEL IT. " And financially the festival RARELY does anything but break even. A headlining act can cost anywhere from 20-30-thousand dollars -- 119 "IT IS SAD BUT LIKE I SAID WE HAVE TO BE FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE." 930 "IT'S UNFORTUNATE BECAUSE OF THE COMMUNITY ASPECT, WE REALLY LIKE TO HAVE THE COMMUNITY COME OUT TO THE BASE, AND HOST THEM AND SHOW THEM WHAT WE DO." 1540 "IT'S JUST A FESTIVE COUPLE OF DAYS THAT THEY HAVE OVER THERE AND WE'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED IT, ALWAYS." MCCS isn't ruling out a return in the future ... But isn't guaranteeing one, either... Also worth noting -- Bay- fest did NOT happen last year. Instead it was replaced by the popular Kaneohe Air Show. MCCS says they'll either do one or the other per year -- but not both. Next years focus in on bringing Bay-fest back.
