A former Niu Valley Middle School teaching assistant charged with stalking and harassing a student was sentenced Wednesday to five years of probation.
Cody Onizuka entered a plea deal with prosecutors allowing him to avoid prison time, even though he was convicted of a felony.
Onizuka was accused of convincing a sixth-grade student to take nude photos of herself in May 2010 with a cellphone he bought for her. Prosecutors said Onizuka stored the images on a computer and engaged in repeated "sexting" with the girl.
Onizuka apologized in court Wednesday before the sentence was handed down.
"I just want to express my regret and my remorse for my actions and apologize to everyone involved in the situation, and I'm ready to accept my responsibility and go through it with the terms of my probation," he said.
Judge Dexter Del Rosario also ordered that Onizuka not to live with any minors while he is on probation.
The deputy prosecutor declined comment following the hearing.
