Former HPD chief dies at 72
Former Honolulu Police Chief Douglas Gibb died in an Iowa nursing home Sunday morning, according to police sources.
Gibb served as the Chief of Police for the Honolulu Police Department from 1983 through 1989.
He was credited with decentralizing the force; creating substations in Kahuku, Waikiki and Downtown Honolulu; and starting a drug abuse prevention program in Oahu elementary schools.
Gibb was 72 years old.
