The medical examiner's office has identified the man who died in a crash at Schofield Barracks' Foote Gate Tuesday as 38-year-old Michael John Daraban Jr. of Wahiawa.

Just after 7 a.m., a dark gray Honda came racing down Kunia Road headed toward Ewa, according to police.

"The Honda was traveling at a high rate of speed on Kunia," said Lt. Bobby Towne of the Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division.

According to witnesses at the intersection of Foote Avenue, a woman driving a white Toyota Camry had the green light to turn into Schofield Barracks.

When she did, the Honda ran the red light and clipped the front of her car.

"Even after the initial collision, the black Honda was still going fast enough that when it hit the light pole, it was cut in half," said Towne.

The force of the impact spread glass, debris and car parts for 100 feet.  The severed halves of the car came to a rest nearby.  At the base of the intersection's light pole, lay the body of a 38-year-old man.

"The passenger of the Honda was ejected and expired at the scene," said Towne.

For several hours, police closed the southbound lanes of Kunia Road while investigators recovered clues to the crash.
