The American Red Cross is helping a family reeling from a fire that destroyed their home in Honomu on the Big Island Wednesday morning.
Firefighters responded to the home on Puako Street just after 6:15 a.m.
The single-family home was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived and the roof already collapsed, according to fire officials.
According to the victim's brother, a man that was transported to the hospital had mobility issues getting out of the house. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.
A 10-year-old boy was in the home at the time of the fire and got out safely, according to sources at the scene.
Damage was estimated at $60,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
