Fire crews rescue hiking group at Iao Valley

Maui County fire crews responded to a report of a young man who fell at Iao Valley State Park Thursday and believed to have broken his leg, according to Maui County fire officials.

Fire crews were called at 6:34 p.m.

Fire officials say a group of about five young adults were hiking along the upper ridge trail, about two miles above the marked pathway, when the 19-year-old man fell of the trail and injured himself.

Rescue crews hiked and escorted the group to safety.  Medics treated the Texas native for injuries to his left leg and head.  He later refused to be transported to the hospital by ambulance and was released at the scene.
