Popular restaurant suffers from fire
A popular restaurant at the Waimalu Shopping Center was closed Tuesday morning after a fire broke out overnight.
It happened at around 1:15 a.m. at the Waimalu Chop Suey restaurant.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire just after 1:40 a.m.
Fire officials say the blaze broke out in a back storage area in the restaurant where some of the used cooking oil was stored.
The back storage area opens to Kauwa Street, which is a road behind the shopping center.
A sprinkler system was able to put out most of the flames by the time fire crews got there. The restaurant had to be ventilated because of the smoke.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported.
Damage was estimated at $60,000.
