Family tries to cope with death of woman hit by car
The family of a pedestrian struck and killed by a car Friday night is trying to cope with her death.
The 56-year-old woman and her husband were hit when they were on their way home from a bus stop on Farrington Highway in Honokai Hale around ten last night.
According to police, a female driver was traveling westbound on Farrington Highway when she swerved to avoid hitting a car parked at the red light.
"It was a screech like 'eerr' and then a crash," described a relative of the couple, Susan Danao.
Family members said the car hit Elena Barcena and her husband Oscar. The mother of five, Elena, did not make it. She later died at the hospital.
"She works at Foodland, so her husband would go catch the bus to Foodland, pick her up, and then they would catch the bus back home," said Danao.
Relatives gathered together at the couple's home to give each other support. The husband and wife recently moved to Hawaii from the Philippines.
"Oh, sad, he [was] crying last night. We got home like 3 o'clock," said relative Joa Danao.
"She was a very happy person. She got along with everybody," said Susan.
Family members still have questions about what happened Friday night.
