To date, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved more than $1.3 million in federal funds for storm-related Kauai projects through the Public Assistance Program, according to the Kauai Civil Defense Agency.
The funding will pay for 75 percent of the cost to repair or replace public property damaged by the heavy rains in March, while the county will cover the balance.
In addition, some of the labor costs associated with the county's emergency response as well as equipment replacement will be reimbursed by FEMA.
The Department of Public Works will receive the bulk of the federal funds, $1.17 million, primarily for the following road and culvert repair work:
- Anini Beach Road – roadway and culvert repairs
- Haleilio Road in Wailua Houselots – culvert repairs
- Haleko Road, Lihue – roadway shoulder repairs
- Hauaala Road, Kapaa – embankment and roadway repairs
- Kaehulua and Apopo roads, Kapaa – roadway and culvert repairs
- Kahuna Road, Kapahi – roadway and shoulder repairs
- Kiowai Place, Kapaa – remove/replace damaged swale
- Ohiki Road, Kilauea – roadway and shoulder repairs, guardrail replacement, and debris removal
- Pua Nani Street, Lihue – repair/replace damaged culvert
- Wehe Road, Lihue – repair/replace damaged air compressors
- Kaiakea fire station – repair/replace damaged photovoltaic panels
- Kalaheo fire station – roof repairs
- Lihue Civic Center – roof repairs and equipment repairs/replacement
Other county departments that have been approved for reimbursement include Kauai Civil Defense Agency - $10,129; Department of Finance - $2,195; Kauai Fire Department - $12,850; Kauai Police Department - $91,175; and Department of Water - $18,324.
A number of storm-related Kauai projects are still being considered for federal funds. Last April, President Barack Obama signed a disaster declaration for Hawaii, making it possible for the state to receive the cost-shared FEMA assistance.
