The FBI is investigating who called in a tip saying there was a hijacker on an Alaska Airlines flight from Kona to Seattle.

HONOLULU -

An FBI investigation was underway Friday to determine who made a false report of a hijacker aboard a plane that took off from Hawaii Thursday night.

Authorities were alerted when someone reported the hijacker aboard the Alaska Airlines flight from Kona to Seattle.

Two Oregon National Guard F-15 fighter jets were scrambled to escort the plane to Sea-Tac Airport.

The FBI says its agents then detained the suspected passenger for questioning, but found the whole thing was a hoax.

Passengers say they didn't even know other planes were escorting them.

Officials say there was never any public threat and the passenger was released.
