And I'm Yunji de Nies.. That father died... As did his daughter's close friend.. KITV4's Catherine Cruz talked to the teenage victim's family today .. It's our top story at six.. The news comes on the day that the National Safety Transporation board is calling for drunk driving levels to be lowered across the country. The family of 13-year-old Kamalani Kalama hopes their loss will put a face on that reccommendation. - 10:24- 10: 37 "We went to go put flowers in rememberance of her . We dont quite understand where, when and how it happened, but we have seen what we have seen and its sad." Jerica Kalama says its like a bad dream. She still can't believe her baby sister won't be coming home. On May 5th, Police say Mark Garcia sped up the Pali. He lost control of his truck flipping it as it hit the embankment. The wreck killed Kalama... She was a passenger in the car. Garcia also died. His 15 year old daughte Denay was critically injured. The Kalama's are heartbroken. Now they're also angry. Today they learned Garcia's blood alcohol level was 1.23 well above the .08 legal limit. - Jerica Kalama 9:25- 9:36 "Life is precious and when you have someone else child in your hands you should be responsible as taking that extra step and be cautious" They cant can't say enough about the outpouring of love and support from family and friends during this ordeal. They are proud of their little girl- a mediator among her peers at Kailua Intermediate. Just today, her principal dropped off her report card.. A 3-point-8 grade average. A shining star. - 11:11- 11:17 "She was always that bubbly crazy kid who would make you laugh when you were having the worst day" They hope the death of their happy-go-lucky teen will have an impact at a time when the NTSB is calling for stricter drunk driving limits. - 12: 29 -13: -"Drinking and driving is wrong and take that extra precuation when you have someone else's child with you. Be that responsible parent: Somebody else child is in your hands and they are trusting you: A message too late for the Garcia and Kalama families, but hopefully one that may save another life. Funeral services for Kamalani will be held at the end of the month. We are told 15 year old Denay Garcia has been released from the hospital and is recovering from her injuries, but still has to deal with the loss of her father and friend.
