A man going the wrong way on the H-2 Freeway was arrested Thursday morning while the man he's accused of hitting in a head-on collision was in extremely critical condition.

Honolulu police said the driver was drunk when he got onto the freeway.

Traffic was backed up for miles shortly after 5 a.m. after police said the driver of the Toyota sports utility vehicle got onto the H-2 Freeway going the wrong way in the northbound lanes.

“What we know so far is the near the Mililani Mauka off ramp, the SUV struck one of the signs. That’s where we believe he entered the freeway and started to come down the wrong way,” said HPD Lt. Bobby Towne.

Police said just moments before the crash, they received calls of a hazardous vehicle driving with one headlight.

The driver of the pick-up, a 44-year-old man from Waipahu, was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in extremely critical condition.

The 37-year-old Ewa Beach man behind the wheel of the SUV was arrested at the scene and taken to the Wahiawa police station for driving under the influence.

This is eerily similar to a crash almost exactly one year ago in the same area.

Lance Miyashiro,40, was killed on the H-2 near the Ka Uka boulevard off ramp by a 21-year-old Waianae man going south on the northbound lanes.

HPD traffic investigators say they don't believe there's a problem with signs on the highways.
