After weeks of testimony, Christopher Deedy finally takes the stand. Explaining to jurors what lead up to the fatal shooting of Kollin Elderts. KITV4's Paul Drewes has details from the day in court. Christopher Deedy's training was a big part of the day's testimony. Training that includes knowing when to use deadly force. KEN AMIANO 345 We do tell them that you are the one who needs to make that determination you make determination is this an immediate threat to my life based on the totality of the circumstance 54 When Deedy took the stand, he explained to jurors why he stepped in. Saying his law enforcement training required him to intervene in what he felt was a violent situation developing between Kollin Elderts, Shane Mederios and another McDonald's customer. Tape2 14:41 there is something we learned in training - if you intervene when an assault is occuring you have failed at your job - we're trained to prevent an assault Deedy told jurors he was trained to de-escalate a situation. But the exact opposite happened. 19:27 "he said hey f-g haole, hey f-g haole you like beef too?" Deedy had been warned by a fellow agent from Hawaii, those angry words directed at him meant trouble. So Deedy gave Elderts a warning. Tape 2 27:00-27:09 i told him i'm a cop and you assault me or anyone else here and you will be arrested. As i was doing that - i reached back and pulled out my credentials and displayed them to him But what happened next surprised Deedy, even with his special agent training. Instead of settling down Eldert Deedy says when he indentifed himself as a law enforcement officer it enraged Elderts. TP2 @ 3002-30 you wont arrest me you gotta gun? you gonna Fing shoot me. Then as Elderts escalated the verbal attack and made threatening movements toward him -- Deedy said he reached for his gun. A move that still did not slow down Elderts and the imminant assault Deedy felt was coming. Tape3 @ 16:31 "when i reached for my gun it was now oh you got a gun. You're gonna need to shoot me cause i'm gonna get you first" Deedy showed very little emotion on the stand today. And claims throughout the escalating encounter, he was constantly assessing and analyzing Eldert's actions. His training told him an intoxicated Elderts was looking for a fight. Of course, that is the defense side of the story -- prosecutors may get a chance to cross-examine Deedy tomorrow, after the special agent details the actual shooting. Kenny, Yunji.
