Fire damages Kahuku wind farm
Honolulu Fire Department crews responded to a fire Wednesday at the First Wind project in Kahuku.
The latest call came just after 11:30 a.m. on Kamehameha Highway between Charlie Road and Marconi Road.
Fire officials said it all started when an alarm went off at 4:45 a.m. First Wind officials said smoke was coming from a battery energy storage facility.
Toxic smoke was mixing with ordinary smoke adding to the danger and difficulty of battling fire, according to fire officials.
HFD said the fire is out of control and the battery cell storage warehouse will be a total loss.
There were no injuries from the fire. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
First Wind said it is working closely with safety and fire officials.
The project is currently offline for the time being and the 12 turbines are not operating.
