It happened at the Marin Tower at 60 North Nimitz Highway at around 9 a.m.
Fire officials say a sprinkler in the building was able to contain a small fire. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
Water damage to one of the units has made it uninhabitable. It affects a family of one adult and seven children.
