Jarvis Higa
A Big Island man accused of escaping from prison faced a judge Monday.
Jarvis Higa, 35, is being held without bail pending his next court hearing.
Police say he escaped from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center last week Wednesday and was arrested on Friday. He was charged with escape in the 1st degree, kidnapping, second-degree assault, second-degree robbery, third-degree criminal property damage, and stealing a vehicle.
A second escapee, 31-year-old Ryan Jeffries-Hamar, is still at large and is considered dangerous.
Court documents say that Higa grabbed a corrections officer around the neck and forced him outside of the prison law library. Higa choked the officer while Jeffries-Hamar punched him several times causing pain and swelling to the victim's lower eye and neck area, according to court documents.
Prosecutors say Higa and Jeffries-Hamar forcibly kicked open a gate that leads from the law library to the parking lot of the facility causing damage to it.
Court documents also say that Jeffries-Hamar took the vehicle keys from an employee and were seen getting into the vehicle and driving away.
