Moanalua Overpass Collapse
Police initially shut down the Moanalua Freeway east and westbound in Aiea after a piece of construction equipment destroyed part of the pedestrian overpass near the Aiea off-ramp Tuesday afternoon.
The eastbound lanes and freeway ramps were reopened just after 1 p.m.
Westbound lanes were reopened much more slowly, remaining partially closed through the beginning of afternoon rush hour traffic, causing a massive backup.
According to city officials, part of the overpass, located near Aiea Elementary School, fell into the freeway after a forklift boom hit the overpass, knocking out a 20-30 foot section of the pedestrian overpass.
EMS confirms no one was injured in the crash. Sources say the students at Aiea Elementary were at recess when the crash happened, but that they were away from the scene.
