City hitting pavement to improve sidewalk safety
The City Council Transportation Committee chair, Mayor Peter Carlisle, otherr city officials and community members walked the streets of Moiliili Tuesday afternoon.
The city was looking for ways to improve the sidewalks for pedstrians and bicyclists.
A national expert on sustainable living joined the city in its walkthrough.
Dan Burden, the executive director of the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute, showed Mayor Carlisle and city council members the inconsistent sidewalk widths along South Beretania Street.
The city council is using Burden's suggestions to compliment its complete street plan, a bill the council is trying to pass.
Burden pointed out while the area has crosswalks, he says the crosswalks need better lighting and more signs.
He said the city council can start some of the work with just a can of paint.
"We always think that its going to cost a huge amount of money and that we can't do it because of cost," said City Council Transportation Committee Chair Breene Harimoto.
City officials will take their walk to Kailua on Wednesday and Aiea on Thursday.
