Chinatown meeting about alcohol ban
The Chinatown Business and Community Association is trying to rally more support for an alcohol ban during street parties, like First Friday events.
Chinatown leaders submitted a petition with more than 500 names asking the liquor commission to ban the sale of alcohol during block parties.
They say the booze during street festivals causes public intoxication and a nuisance.
So far, no government action has been implemented and the Chinatown Business and Community Association held a meeting Tuesday morning to review the issue.
During the meeting, the group also met with their state representative and senator to get more support behind the ban.
"It's a constant excuse that we find that these promoters say, 'We need the alcohol to make money,'" said Chu Lan Shubert-Kwock of the Chinatown Business and Community Association. "But, if you need to make money on a cultural festival, don't do it. Get cultural funding. Get sponsors and do one for the community and not for profit."
Shubert-Kwock says one legislator supports the ban. She says her group is still collecting signatures in hopes of getting an ordinance passed.
