Much of downtown looks a little cleaner tonight, thanks to the second "Chinatown Scrub Down". KITV4's Ashley Moser shows us how using a little elbow grease...can go a long way. Historic buildings... covered in graffitti. Main streets...covered in trash. Artist Pegge Hopper says that after 30 years of displaying her art in this gallery on Nuuanu Ave ...chinatown needs help. Peggy Hopper Chinatown Business Owner 7:45-7:53 "CHINATOWN...IT'S LIKE THE...THE...LOST SISTER. WE'VE BEEN BEGGING FOR SO LONG TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF ATTENTION." And today they got it! More than 140 volunteers spared their Saturday snooze ...to scrub down Chinatown from Fort street to River and Nimitz to Beretenia. They grabbed paint brushes...sponges and even good ole sand paper...to get down to the nitty gritty. Michael Colon-Yoshimoto HPU Volunteer 15:18-15:20 "WE WALKED UP AND DOWN THIS STREET. WE HAVE A BUNCH OF TEAMS GOING DOWN EACH STREET. AND SO WE'RE PICKING UP RUBBISH...CLEANI NG UP TRASH." Volunteers came from all across the island but one group says this event hits home. Michael 15:01-15:09 "WITH HPU SINCE OUR CAMPUS IS BASED IN THE CHINATOWN...DO WNTOWN ARE...WE REALLY WANTED TO BE ABLE TO GIVE BACK." Standup 3:10-3:21 "SOME OF THE BUSINESSES HERE IN CHINATOWN HAVE BEEN HIT HARD WITH GRAFFITI LIKE THIS. AND SOME VOLUNTEERS TRY TO TAKE OFF THE SPRAY PAINT. BUT THEY SAY SCRUBBING DOWN CHINATOWN WILL BE AN ONGOING PROJECT." Michael 16:15-16:19 "WHEN YOU START TO LOVE ON YOUR COMMUNITY MORE AND MORE THE COMMUNITY WILL START TO LOVE ON ITSELF MORE AND MORE." A phase business owners say is a moral boost for Chinatown. 10:19-10:27 "IT'S AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE ECONOMY... OF THE TOURISTS. THIS COULD BE VERY LUCRATIVE." .
