HONOLULU -

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu says it has a signed a letter of intent to buy about 39 acres of land from the University of Hawaii West Oahu campus to build a parish and a high school.

The announcement was made Wednesday after the Board of Regents approved the land sale.

The Catholic Diocese says it has been watching tremendous growth in West Oahu and four of the six parishes in Leeward Oahu are over capacity.

The sale could be finalized by the second quarter of 2013.

The purchase price is expected to be $32 million, which includes cash and improvements to adjacent lots.

There is no firm timetable on construction of a high school.
