California man nearly downs off Kaanapali

Maui County fire officials said a 51-year-old California man was taken to the hospital Friday in serious condition after he was found unresponsive in waters off Kaanapali.

Fire crews were called just after 9:30 a.m. to the beach fronting the Sheraton resort.

The man was swimming with his family, reportedly went under and did not surface.

According to his wife, he was underwater for about a minute when a bystander helped him to shore.

Fire rescue crews and medics found the patient breathing and responsive.
