KAPA`A, Hawaii -

A 41-year-old California man died on Thursday while swimming in waters off Kapa'a on the east side of Kauai, according to county officials.

The man was identified as Cristian Lung of Castro Valley, Calif.

Police Dispatch received a call at around 2:50 p.m. to report a swimmer who appeared to be in distress in waters fronting the vacant lot next to the Plantation Hale Hotel.

Bystanders were attempting to assist the man when firefighters arrived to the scene. Firefighters assisted in bringing the man’s unresponsive body to shore and began performing CPR.

Medics then transported the man to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This is Kauai's eleventh reported drowning since the start of 2013.

The National Weather Service has posted a high surf warning for all north and west facing shores until at least 6 a.m. Saturday.  Large breaking waves, significant shore breaks and dangerous currents will make entering the water very hazardous. Officials warn that anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.

Lifeguards urge beachgoers to swim near a lifeguard tower.
