Hualalai Road in Kailua-Kona was temporarily closed on Friday while Big Island fire crews battled a brush fire that scorched about 8 acres.
The road was reopened at around 4 p.m.
Fire crews were called to the scene just after 11:45 a.m.
Upon arrival, the brush fire was west of Hualalai Elderly Housing, according to fire officials. They said fuel for the fire was heavy with dry grass well above head height as well as kiawe trees.
By 2:35 p.m. the fire was 60 percent contained and a fire line was made. Fire crews spent the night working on hot spots and mop up operations continued on Saturday.
