Broken pipe closes popular Ala Moana businesses for hours
Barnes & Noble, Macaroni Grill affected
Plumbing crews worked all day in order to reopen two businesses at the Ala Moana Center.
Customers were blocked off from Barnes & Noble bookstore at the shopping center. Part of the ceiling fell according to the store's supervisor, but the stench alone pushed some away.
"I came and I smelled it and I saw that it was closed and there were a bunch of security guards outside," said Barnes & Noble customer Kristine Tofti.
Tofti who usually studies in the bookstore, sat on a bench instead as she waited for the store to open. The problem started when a pipe broke at Macaroni Grill a couple floors above.
"It broke about (Friday) night around 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and there was water damage," said Jay Kaneshiro with Macaroni Grill.
Macaroni Grill was also forced to close for hours.
"I'm sad because I came here to eat Italian food today for lunch, and I'm disappointed it's closed today right now because of plumbing problems," said customer Butch Ayau.
The plumbing issue caused the most damage at the bookstore. The stores supervisor said customers weren't allowed in the store because of unsanitary conditions. The carpet and computer books were also damaged.
Both stored were able to reopen Saturday afternoon.
