A 1-year-old boy died after being pulled from the water at the North Shore surf spot known as "Rock Piles" on Saturday, police said.

Investigators said the boy was playing near the shoreline when family members lost sight of him about 6 p.m. Saturday. He was later pulled from the water and found to be unresponsive.

Emergency crews took the boy in critical condition to Kahuku Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Honolulu police said they were investigating the case as an unattended death.
