Botox used as new treatment for migrainesUPDATED 8:31 PM HST Oct 25, 2013Video Transcript
Botulism is an often fatal poisoning caused by improperly stored food. But more than 6 decades ago scientists figured out the bacterium could have beneficial uses. KITV4's Pamela Young finds out first hand. In the 60's a refined botulism bacterium was used to correct eye problems, muscle spasms and excessive sweating. It was called Botox. But it wasn't until 2002 it was FDA approved for cosmetic procedures. Botox injections are now the most common cosmetic operation, with nearly 5 million performed every year in the U.S. alone. "AND NOW BOTOX IS GOING BACK TO ITS MEDICAL ORIGINS. THE POISON IS NOW A PANACEA FOR MANY SUFFERERS OF CHRONIC MIGRAINES, THOSE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE HEADACHES ON 15 OR MORE DAYS A MONTH." Dr. Monique Canonico treats nearly 70 patients a week with botox, most for headache pain. IT'S THE SAME STUFF PEOPLE GET FOR COSMETIC BUT A HIGHER DOSE IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS BECAUSE WE'RE DOING IT FOR PAIN CONTROL. First, a test of reflexes to detect weaknesses in the nerves or muscles. CAN YOU SAY GOD BLESS THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS? GOD BLESS THE COMMONWEAL TH OF MASSACHUSET TS. A slurring of speech would indicate some damage to the brain. IT IS A DIFFERENT EXPerience. THAN TAKING A PILL. THE NEEDLE IS SMALL, ALMOST AS IF YOU WERE GETTING A TB TEST. IT IS UNCOMFORTA BLE, ABOUT 20 INJECTIONS.. 20 injections? Time to bite the bullet. IT DOES GO INTO THE MUSCLE LOCALLY AND PARTIALLY PARALYZES IT. PATIENTS WITH MIGRAINE HAVE A LOT OF PAIN ON A DAILY BASIS SO PEOPLE GET THROUGH THIS 5 MINUTES OF A LITTLE MORE INTENSE PAIN WITHOUT A PROBLEM. WE LIKE TO DO THE BASE OF THE SKULL, WHERE THE MUSCLE ACTUALLY ATTACHES. THE HEADACHE PROTOCAL DOES INVOLVE THE MUSCLES HERE, THE CORRIGATORS AND ONE IN THEPRESAROU S AND HIGH ON THE FOREHEAD BECAUSE SOMETIMES THE PAIN SPREADS HERE. Some patients feel relief immediately, most within 72 hours. The treatment lasts about 3 months. IT'S NOT A MIRACLE FOR EVERYONE BUT FOR SOME PATIENTS IT IS A MIRACLE.
