Homes in Wailuku were evacuated Tuesday afternoon as a precaution due to a possible homemade explosive, which turned out to be a hoax, according to the Maui Police Department.
Police and fire crews responded to Mokuhau Road just before 1 p.m.
The Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists in Honolulu were contacted.
The Wailuku Gym on Market Street was designated as an evacuation center for residents that have been displaced. Transportation from Mokuhau Park to the evacuation center was available for affected residents.
About 25 residents spent several hours at the Red Cross shelter.
The ordnance team found no explosives and was determined to be a hoax.
It was taken into evidence and the investigation is ongoing.
Just before 9 p.m. Tuesday, residents were able to go back to their homes.
