fire on the Big Island ... KITV4's Brenton Awa joining us now with tonight's TOP story. Kenny -- The area where the fire started is filled with trees and brush -- but we're told the flames were so high -- some residents over a mile away could see it. This is all that's left of the house that used to stand in Mountain View. Now it's nearly unrecognizable -- with only a few metal posts still up from what once was a car port. 207 "THE SIZE OF IT, ALL FOUR CORNERS OF THAT BUILDING WERE GOING. QUITE A FUNERAL FIRE." The blaze broke out around 7- last-night at this home in the Eden Roc Subdivision. We're told the single story house on Palainui Avenue was engulfed in flames and the home's walls collapsed at some point during the fire. 156 "THAT WAS HELL, THAT WAS A 250 FOOT HIGH FIRE FROM WHAT I SAW ON THE ROAD AND I TURNED AROUND AND WENT BACK REAL QUICK." Fire crews were able to get the blaze under control just before 8 and had it completely out at 10 last night. 104 - 119 "I SAW IT AND SAID ITS TIME TO PRAY FOR HIM AND I WENT BACK HOME AND THAT WAS IT. 10-15 MINUTES LATER I HEARD THE FIRE TRUCKS COME AND THAT WAS THAT. That neighbor also said he knew the man who lived there. He says the man was elderly and neighbors often provided him assistance. 38 "LOCAL PEOPLE HELPED HIM, THEY BROUGHT HIM STASHES OF FOOD, STASHES OF VODKA THAT HE LIKED, FUEL FOR HIS GENERATOR, PROPANE FOR HIS STOVES." Fire investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the blaze. Damages are estimated at 33- thousand-dollars -- and the identity of the victim has not yet been released.
