Big swells hit the North ShoreUPDATED 8:29 PM HST Jan 17, 2014Video Transcript
Some love it, some dread it... But everybody's watching. KITV 4's Ashley Moser shows us... The heavy stuff is just getting started. Consider this... ROUND ONE. The first.... of THREE swells lining up to hit the North Shore. Gwen Kagaoan 37:32-37:38 "I'M IMPRESSED. I HAVEN'T SEEN THE SWELLS LIKE THIS IN A LONG TIME." California resident Gwen Kah-guw'-ahn says she came out to enjoy the sites on the North Shore but got more than she bargained for. 37:45-37:55 "IT'S VERY DANGEROUS. THE WAVES ARE PRETTY CHOPPY. THERE'S A REASON WHY THERE'S THE CAUTION TAPE AROUND...FOR THE PUBLIC'S SAFETY." Standup 36:28-36:37 "WITH ROARING WAVES... THERE'S EXCITEMENT IN THE AIR FOR SURFERS... BUT FOR AMATEUR SWIMMERS. THEY WERE GIVEN CLEAR SIGNS AND WARNINGS TO STAY AWAY FROM THESE CRASHING WAVES." The waves had the potential to become 35-footers... Surfers settled for 15-foot breaks...in expected choppy conditions. Greg Russ 26:26-26:29 "LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE LUMPY. NEVERTHELESS WE'RE OUT THERE." Greg Russ 27:20-27:23 "WE LIVE FOR THIS BIG WAVE SURFING!" As for homeowners worried about erosion on their beachfront properties near Rocky Point... Bob Buell 31:12-31:14 "LOOKS OKAY SO FAR." For safety measures .... Emergency crews packed sand alongside these eroding properties. Residents say the swells direction is helping to keep that sand in place. Bob Buell 30:29-30:34 "THAT'S GOING TO HELP THEM BECAUSE BEFORE THEY HAD NO SAND. IT WENT RIGHT UP TO THEIR FRONT DOOR." With reasonable conditions today... homeowners are bracing themselves for next week's swell.... and crossing their fingers for more favorable weather conditions. Ashley Moser...KITV-4 news.
