On Monday, 40,000 college students will add to the freeway and bus congestion.

It may also be the test of the recent freeway and bus route changes made by the state and city this summer.

On a section of the H-1 Freeway in town, there's an extra lane where the shoulder used to be.

The realignment has surprised some drivers in a good way.

"It’s going better in the times I have been through. I don’t seem to get stuck as I have used. It seem to get though faster than it has in the past,” said Joe Erban.

The lanes are more narrow in places, but the drivers we talked to didn’t seem to mind.

"You have just got to get used to it. You have to drive slower and more carefully and watch your lane. The dangerous part is if you get a flat tire. There is no shoulder to pull into, that's the loss," said Todd Hara.

Drivers were surprised the change happened so quickly, and that it didn’t cost a lot.
Time will tell is it’s a good fix and can be a permanent one.
That can be said of the changes to the city bus schedule as well.

On Sunday, riders had some figuring out to do as routes in the Waikiki, Kapahulu and Kaimuki areas were adjusted.

Bus drivers reported fielding lots of questions from confused riders, which may only be compounded as more college students are added to the mix.
