Authorities fail to retrieve 2 bodies from ocean

Rough waters make retrieval difficult

KALIHWAI, Hawaii -

A news release from the Kauai Fire Department indicated the fire department and the U.S. Coast Guard could not recover two bodies floating in choppy waters off Kua’i’s north shore on Friday.

The bodies appeared to be lifeless and were observed in the water for about 40 minutes, according to the release. A U.S. Coast Guard vessel tried to reach the areas, the release indicated, but the ocean was too rough. An air unit was also unable to retrieve the body, the release indicated.

The search was called off at 6:35 p.m., according to the release.
