the students. Asiana was founded 25 years ago as competition to Korea's dominant carrier, Korean Airlines. It now operates 14 domestic and 90 international routes, including two to Hawaii. In 1993 service was launched to Honolulu and an office opened near Ala Moana Center. 5 years later the Korean economic crisis suspended flights to Hawaii, but in 2008 charter service between Honolulu and Incheon was launched twice a week, and last year to Seoul. 4 years ago an Asiana 777 aircraft, like the one that crashed at SFO, aborted a takeoff from SEATAC airport after a compressor stall had fire and smoke pouring from an engine. 2 years ago a cargo fire forced a flight bound for Shanghai to crash into the Pacific off Jeju Island.
