After-Christmas deals could rival Black Friday

It was Black Friday deja vu for consumers.  The day after Christmas is one of the busiest shopping days of the year -- and for good reason.

Local retailers were offering some big sales in order to keep the spending momentum going.

Holiday shopping is hardly over.  Retailers are now rolling out the discounts that rival Black Friday.

Bargain hunters like Teri Lee and her mother Gale Muramoto weren't wasting any time.

"We got here at 7:15 a.m.," said Lee, referring to what time they arrived at Ala Moana Shopping Center Wednesday.

National retail numbers show holiday spending down this year, blaming consumer uneasiness on unemployment, the impending fiscal cliff and bad weather on the mainland.

But Hawaii merchants said they saw steady business all the way to Christmas.

"For us, we were able to be steady and I think we’re on par with last year," said Suzie Metivier, Reyn Spooner store manager.

Now they're hoping more bargains will bring a second wave of shoppers.

"To maintain the momentum because usually after Christmas, people return things, exchange things and business takes a nosedive.  So we want to maintain sales," said Metivier.

Consumers had an extra-long shopping season this year with five weekends to spend money, which helped stores stay in the black.

"I think we spent a little bit more this year, in fact, we were pretty good about shopping ahead of time," said Sean Tajima, who was shopping with his daughters at Ala Moana Center.

Now, retailers are extending the after-Christmas sales long past the 26th.  Good news for Terri and Gale.

"We bought a couple of blouses that were half off, and then an extra 20 percent. Then we bought shoes that were on sale with an extra 20 percent if you had a Macy’s card," said Muramoto.

Good idea.  Local retail holiday shopping totals should be out next week.
