Police: Murder suspect called 911 on himself
A Hilo man accused of killing his girlfriend and her mother went before a judge on Thursday.
Sean Matsumoto stood in silence, listening to the charges against him.
Investigators said the 34-year-old shot his girlfriend, 45-year-old Rhonda Lynn Alohalani Ahu and then her mother Elaine, killing both just before 11 p.m. on Monday night.
Matsumoto's grandfather said the last few days have been unbearable.
"I'm sorry about the whole incident and I'm so depressed I cannot sleep at night," said Masayuki Matsumoto.
Police said it was Matsumoto himself, who called 911, telling the operator he just shot two people at his home on Leilani Street.
Court documents outlined when police arrived, they found the two victims, with gunshot wounds to both their heads and faces, and nearby lay a loaded 12-gauge shotgun on the living room sofa.
His grandfather said Matsumoto lived with him in the past, and that he had tried to get help his grandson get his life together.
"I used to support him, I still doing, he told me he can't find a job," said Matsumoto.
The judge denied bail, setting a preliminary hearing for next Tuesday.
