Maui fire officials said 36 students and 10 adults were rescued Thursday after they were caught in a flash flood at Waihee Stream in North Maui.
Fire crews responded to the area about 100 feet upstream from the river mouth at around 9:30 a.m.
Six students participating in a Kamehameha Schools summer enrichment program were treated for minor injuries at Maui Memorial Medical Center after an unexpected surge of water, estimated at around 2-feet-high, swept through the group, according to Kamehameha Schools.
The students who were injured were taken to the emergency room by program staff after being evaluated by Maui emergency personnel.
All members of the group are safe and accounted for, and families of all students involved are being notified.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources is conducting an investigation.
