28 firecracker permits sold on Oahu for July 4th holiday

Firecrackers went on sale Friday for the Independence Day holiday next Wednesday. But, only 28 permits were sold on Oahu, according to city officials.

The deadline to buy a firecracker permit for Independence Day was last week Friday.

A $25 permit allows the purchase of up to 5,000 firecrackers.  That means there can only be a grand total of 140,000 legal firecrackers set off next Wednesday.

Here's a look at the number of permits sold each year for the Independence Day holiday:

2012 - 28 permits sold

2011 - 95 permits sold

2010 - 174 permits sold

2009 - 119 permits sold

2008 - 154 permits sold

The city's ban on most fireworks went into effect in January of 2011.

You can purchase a permit for firecrackers for the next New Year's celebrations until December 21.
