Mid-afternoon outside a Macy's in Kaneohe shouldn't make for a scary situation, but for a few terrifying moments on Tuesday, it did.
The Windward Mall parking lot is a busy place at most hours. Tuesday, it became a crime scene when a 19-year-old woman told police a man tried to kidnap her.
She said first he asked questions, then he grabbed her. Then she said she screamed, and when another woman rushed over to help, he let go and sped off. Shoppers told us they are leery of that part of the parking lot.
Shopper Mikey Barros said, "It's a free space, people just hang out over here because it's dark. Security guards usually hang out on the other side of the mall."
A police officer told us the area is of concern to them because there are a lot of trees that block peoples view and there aren't that many lights.
During the day or night shoppers said the brick wall in the area is a hang out spot for kids, and is a place that does not get watched.
Shopper Lauhuiki Gaines said, "There are people that hang around. I just kind of stay away from them because they are usually smoking and drinking."
Some workers at the mall said the attempted kidnapping will make them take more precautions.
"Have my phone on me or ask someone to walk with me so I feel safe," said mall worker Whitney Teramoto.
Police said the male was driving a white sedan. He was in his late 30s early 40s, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, 190 pounds with brown hair and a gray beard.
