A 17-year-old Big Island girl has completed a 26-mile swim across Kaiwi Channel.
Leahi Camacho of Kailua-Kona swam Sunday between Molokai and Oahu. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports she is the youngest known swimmer to complete the challenging feat.
She began her swim at Laau Point on Molokai.
She left after 7:30 p.m. Saturday and lifeguards at Sandy Beach confirmed her arrival at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
On her facebook page Camacho posted a thank you to all of her supporters Sunday night. "Love all the posts and every bit of support all of you have ever given me. I have never been so thankful for fresh water, soap, and conditioner. Also I have never been so thankful for such an amazing community," Camacho said.
"Seriously without a good foundation I would have never been able to do this, and that good foundation is all of you," she added. "Love you guys so much. Incredible how we all come together for one person."
