Moped Crash in Kalihi
HONOLULU -

A family was grieving Sunday morning after a moped crash Saturday night claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy.

It happened on Kalihi Street near Machado Street just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police say the collision happened when a Lexus sedan pulled out and made a left hand turn onto Kalihi Street.

That's when the moped rider collided with the sedan.

Police say the moped rider was not wearing a helmet when he collided with a Lexus being driven by an adult male from Honolulu.

Two passengers in the car were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police say speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors for the driver of the Lexus.

Kalihi Street was closed between Nobrega and Kamohoali'i Streets while police investigated. It was reopened around 7 a.m. Sunday.

This is the seventh traffic fatality on Oahu in 2013 compared to four at the same time last year.
