Young. One person is dead and 4 minors are left in serious condition following a crash that happened off of Farrington highway in Makaha. KITV4's Nana Ohkawa has tonight's top story. Nana? Pamela, Witnesses say a pickup-truck was carrying a dozen people--many of them teenagers when it crashed off the highway near Makua Cave. Police say the driver who originally FLED the scene turned himself in just hours ago. :14 :23 :49 Police say it was 4 in the morning when witnesses saw this pick-up truck driving erratically north bound on Farrington Highway before it crashed. They say almost everyone in the truck was running away as they arrived on scene. bridge: "INVESTIGATORS SAY THE TRUCK WENT OFF THE HIGHWAY STRUCK THIS CONCRETE PILING BEING USED AS A CURB. AND SHORTLY AFTER BURST INTO FLAMES" 36:00 UPON THE FIRE CREWS EXTINGUISHING THE FLAMES OF THE VEHICLE, A BODY WAS DISCOVERED NEXT TO THE VEHICLE.36:09 That person is dead... with many others injured. Taken to the trauma center in serious condition...teenage girls ages 13, 14, and 15...and a 16 year old teenage boy. Right now, if there are no available seats in the cab, and the side racks and tailgate are securely closed it's legal to ride in the back. 1202 IN OUR INABILITY TO PASS LEGISLATION TO BAN OR PUT MORE RESTRICTIONS ON RIDING IN THE BACK OF THE PICK UP TRUCK EVERYDAY WE PUT MANY OF OUR CITIZENS AT RISK AND THIS IS A CLEAR EXAMPLE WHERE INDIVIDUALS WERE INJURED AND POSSIBLY KILLED FROM RIDING IN THE BACK OF A PICK UP TRUCK 1222 Espero's bill is still waiting hearing. Investigators say speed was a factor in the crash. The investigation is still on-going. The driver was arrested for failure to render aid. And a negligent homicide case has been opened.
