2 dead, 1 critically injured in Big Island vehicle crashes
Two separate vehicle crashes on the Big Island Tuesday left two people dead and a man in critical condition.
A single-car crash happened on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near mile marker 79 in North Kona at around 2:39 p.m. Tuesday.
The driver was identified as Michelle K. Deluz, 24, of a Waikoloa address.
The passenger was identified as Gary J. Fergerstrom, 24, of a Kailua-Kona address.
Fire officials say the car went off the roadway into a lava field. Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle. Police say seat belts were not used.
Deluz was pronounced dead at the scene. Fergerstrom was airlifted to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition where he later died.
Police say speed was a factor in the crash.
Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Thomas Koyanagi at 326-4646, extension 229.
These are the 14th and 15th traffic fatalities on the Big Island this year compared with 14 at this time last year.
A separate head-on crash in Waimea sent one man to the hospital in critical condition and a woman in stable condition.
Fire officials say it happened on Kawaihae Road near Anekona Road around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
One of the drivers was pinned in the car and had to be rescued by fire crews.
